道德經上卷 (Virtue Scripture - Part I)

觀玅章第一 (Chapter 1 Inner essence observation)

道可道;非常道。

The way can be described; however, it is not a common way.

名可名;非常名。

The name can be called; however, it is not a common name.


無,名天地之始。

We use nothing to call the origin of the universe.

有,名萬物之母。

We use something to call the mother(nature) of myraid things.


故常無,欲以觀其妙。

Therefore, it is commonly nothing, and we wanna observe its inner essence.

常有,欲以觀其徼。

It is commonly something, and we want to observe its outer aspects.


此兩者同出而異名。

Both come from the thing with the other name.

同謂之玄。

It is altogether called the subtlety.


玄之又玄,眾玅之門。

The subtlety within subtleties is the gate toward the crowded essences.


觀徼章第二 (Chapter 2 Outer aspects observation)

天下皆知美之 為美斯惡已。

In the world we know how beautiful this is whereas that is ugly.

皆知善之為善 斯不善已。

We know how good this is whereas that is not good.


故有無相生。

Therefore it is given forth for something and nothing.

難易相成。

It is achieved with the difficulty and the easiness.

長短相形。

It is shaped by the longer and the shorter ones.

高下相傾。

It is tilted by the higher and the lower ones.

音聲相和。

It is moderated with the voice and the sound.

前後相隨。

It is followed by the front and the back.


是以聖人處無為之事,

Hence, the sage stays with the things for nothing.

行不言之敎。

Give the instructions without saying.

萬物作焉而不辭。

The myriad things will be done without taking leave.


生而不有。

Gives it forth but does not own it.

為而不恃。

Does it but does not rely on it.

功成而弗居。

Accomplishes it but avoids the occupation.


夫惟弗居,是以不去。

The occupation has thereby been avoided, and it thus does not go away.


安民章第三 (Chapter 3 People settled down)

不尙賢,使民不爭。

Do not promote the nobility, and it will keep people from striving.

不貴難得之貨,使民不為盜。

Do not honor goods that are difficult to get, and it will keep people from being thieves.

不見可欲,使民心不亂。

Do not show desirables off, and it will keep people's mind from disturbance.


是以聖人之治:

So that the sage's treatment is to:

虛其心、

Open their mind,

實其腹、

Fill their stomach,

弱其志、

Weaken their ambitions,

強其骨。

Strengthen their physiques.

常使民無知無欲。

Commonly keep it unknown and unwanted by people.

使夫智者不敢為也。

It is thereby kept that the smart men dare not do so.

為無為;則無不治。

Do it for nothing; thus, nothing will be untreated.


不盈章第四 (Chapter 4 Unfilled)

道沖,而用之或不盈。

In the way it(dharma) washes away as water, and then we use it or let it unfilled.

淵兮!似萬物之宗。

How profound! It(dharma) is like the ancestor of the myriad things.


挫其銳、

It blunts their sharpness.

解其紛、

It unravels their complexity.

和其光、

It moderates their illumination.

同其塵。

It uniformes their dust.


湛兮!似或存。

How clear! It(dharma) is likely there or it exists.

吾不知誰之子?

I do not know of whoms child(result)?

象,帝之先。

Of the phenomenon, which is before the Lord.


守中章第五 (Chapter 5 Kepted in the center)

天地不仁,

In the universe it(God) is unkind,

以萬物為芻狗 。

By taking the myriad things as sacrificed straw dogs.

聖人不仁,

The sage is unkind,

以百姓為芻狗。

By taking the public as sacrificed straw dogs.


天地之間,其猶橐籥乎!

In between the universe, it is such as a bellow!

虛而不屈,

It opens and it is not bent.

動而愈出。

It blows and it rather expands.


多言數窮,

By saying more it limits the possibility.

不如守中?

Why not keep it in the center?


谷神章第六 (Chapter 6 Spirits in the valley)

谷神不死,是謂玄牝。

The spirits in the valley did not die, and it is called a subtle female mammal.

玄牝之門,是謂天地根。

The gate for the subtle female mammal is called the root of the universe.

綿綿若存,用之不勤。

It(gate) is continueous as existing and it is hardly used.
